Recent research has found that almost half of all incidents on drilling rigs are attributed to hand and finger injuries – half! Many of these are impacts, cuts or other injuries as a result of workers losing their grip while working in oily environments.

But workers in the oil and gas industry aren’t the only ones at risk – anyone who works in an environment where there’s a chance of oil spilling onto their hands should have the proper hand protection.

For protection against oil hazards, the proper hand protection is a pair of gloves that performs two duties: won’t allow oil to soak through to your hand (prolonged skin exposure to crude oil can cause a whole host of problems) and allows you to maintain your grip while working in an oily environment.

There are plenty of gloves on the market that claim to repel, resist, or completely block oil – but which ones actually do?

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OIL-RESISTANT GLOVES

Designing and manufacturing oil-resistant gloves shares some similarities with gloves designed to resist water. In our feature article on the science behind modern waterproofing technology, we discussed the four different ways gloves could be manufactured in order to resist water: treatment, single layer, double layer, and triple layer.

The first process, treatment, also applies to creating gloves that can repel and resist oil. Treatment can include adding a chemical (typically in spray form) to the gloves in order to give them oil-resisting properties.

While applying an oil-resistant treatment is a quick and cost-effective method of making gloves oil-resistant, there are some drawbacks.

For starters, treatments tend to wear out quickly and their efficacy can lessen with use and washes. This means that each day you wear your oil-resistant gloves the less effective they will be – and their oil-resisting properties will deteriorate even faster if you try to extend their useful life through laundering.

Doesn’t sound like a particularly good investment, does it? Shouldn’t there be a better way to make gloves oil-resistant?

Because our manufacturing process is different and builds oil-resistance directly into our gloves, our oil-resistant gloves provide better protection than gloves treated after production.

Grip tests conducted in our lab show that gloves treated with Oilbloc™ deliver 34% more grip force in oily conditions than competitive gloves – that’s a difference that makes a difference!

In addition to providing better oil resistance, gloves treated with Oilbloc™ maintain their oil-resistant properties longer than gloves treated with an oil-resistant spray.

What’s even better – because the oil-resistant properties are tanned directly into the gloves, laundering doesn’t weaken the gloves’ ability to repel oil.
