A Superior (G)love Story

We’ve often featured stories about the human side of our business, including highlighting our Product Strategy team, Business Development team, and our teams in Springdale and Point Leamington, Newfoundland.

For Valentine’s Day, we wanted to do something special, something a little more intimate than our usual employee features, we wanted to bring you a Superior Love Story!

If you think that true love and hand protection can’t go hand-in-hand, then you haven’t met Don and Tina!

THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING SPECIAL

In 1999, the lives of Don and Tina couldn’t have been more different. Don had been working at Superior Glove for almost 15 years and Tina had just started. Having recently ended a relationship, Tina was looking for a new adventure and a career opportunity close to home that would be flexible enough to accommodate her new situation as a working single mom.

As luck would have it, her sister-in-law knew just the place – Superior Glove was hiring! (As it turns out, we’re hiring RIGHT NOW too, check out our open positions!)

Tina started right away in the packaging department and eventually moved to the shipping department, which was under the purview of, unbeknownst to her, her future husband.

Wouldn’t it make for a great story if, from the moment they first set eyes on each other, Don and Tina fell deeply and madly in love? We thought so, too, but both swear it did not happen that way – in fact, they claim to have barely noticed one another! It was another co-worker’s persistence that led to their first date and set the rest of their lives in motion.

THE FIRST DATE

“I don’t want to say I didn’t notice Tina,” explains Don. “Because I did, she’s beautiful inside and out, but I was her superior, so I wasn’t thinking about her as someone I could potentially date.”

Don claims it was a co-worker who pressured him into setting up a date with Tina; Tina tells a similar story of the same co-worker.

“It was actually Maureen who thought we’d work well as a couple, I thought she was crazy,” admits Tina. “I’m thankful she was so persistent because marrying Don was the best decision I ever made.”

After prodding on both sides from Maureen, the first date was set – it was to be a trip to Niagara Falls to see the festival of lights, what could be more romantic?

As it turns out, romance was nowhere to be found. However, that first date struck up a friendship that wouldn’t take long to blossom into romance.

“Everything started out as friendship. I never thought things would turn out the way they did, but I’m so grateful that they did. Don helped me get through some really tough times and I feel like I went through a lot to find him and find what we have together.”

A SUPERIOR WEDDING

“When I married Tina I got more than a wife, I got an instant family,” says Don with a big smile on his face.

“When we met, I had three kids already and Don didn’t have any, so I wasn’t sure how he’d adapt to family life but it was like he’d always been there,” adds Tina.

Of course, a romance that began and developed at Superior Glove couldn’t end in anything other than a Superior wedding – and it was! Many of Don and Tina’s co-workers attended the wedding and even Tony Geng, President of Superior Glove, made an appearance.

THE KEY TO WORK/LIFE BALANCE

So, how do you maintain a healthy, happy marriage when you live together but also spend all day at work together?

For Don and Tina, the answer is simple: Home is home, work is work.

“We never bring work issues into our home life and vice versa,” says Don.

“We behave differently at work,” added Tina. “To see us at work you wouldn’t know we were husband and wife, but it’s a different story when we’re at home.”

Coming up on 16 years of marriage, Don and Tina know a thing or two about what it takes to maintain a successful marriage. Their advice to the rest of us? Respect and honesty.

In that same vein, both Don and Tina have been with Superior Glove for over 20 years and credit the open, family atmosphere as what keeps them coming back (well, that and the 3-minute drive to work!).

“The Geng family is very generous,” explains Don. “Where else are you going to find, in a company this size, where the President takes every employee out to lunch? That’s unheard of. Not to mention all the great celebrations we have all year long.” (He’s right, we just had one!)

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

From all of us at Superior Glove, we hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and a year full of love, laughter, and safe hands!
